Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
