No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
